A Month of Gratitude, Day 4 of 30

11/4/2019

When Nate came home from school today, I asked him, as usual, how the day went.

"Good," he said, "except for one thing."

He went on to tell me about a guest they had visiting the classroom, who brought in artifacts from World War II. I assume the tie-in here is Remembrance Day, which is coming up.

He said that among the items were grenades, bomb shells and a gas mask. There was a story about a prisoner of war who was shot in the stomach. Naturally, this freaked him out. While I agree it is important for us to learn about these things, I'm not sure an anxious nine-year-old is the ideal audience.

Today I am so grateful that Nate's teacher offered her class a gracious way to opt out of a situation that made them uncomfortable. I'm also grateful (and proud) that Nate was in touch with his feelings enough to agree he'd like to leave the classroom to do another activity while this took place, and that he was brave enough to be the only kid to do so.
